“It could do thousands of pounds worth of damage if there is a lot of water.

“But if it’s just a small amount you should be able to drain the tank and replace a couple of serviceable parts for around £200 to £400.”

A Morrisons spokesman said: “Water was detected in one our unleaded tanks yesterday.

“As soon as we became aware of the problem, the pumps were shut down.
