The operation, part of an investigation into thefts from commerical fuel lines by HMRC and Kent Police last Thursday, saw them carry out searches in the Upminster and West Thurrock areas, where they discovered a laundering plant.

Another laundering plant was discovered in Merseyside.

The two plants are capable of producing 20 million litres of illicit fuel a year and leave the Treasury £12million out of pocket.
