There are 2700 gas stations in Bulgaria. Their number keeps rising. Apparently low-quality fuel can be found in big chains as well. "The biggest problem is at small gas stations, where the fuel is cheaper, thereby misleading people," Tsankov explained.

The expert added that the incompliance with standards is not that big of a problem. "In some cases we find that the fuel they are selling is not diesel at all," he alarmed.

"Gasoline or diesel, which deviates by more than 10% from the average price, is definitely a result of tax fraud, or is diluted in some way. Those who are looking for cheap fuel risk damaging their car," said Andrey Delchev, President of the Bulgarian Petroleum and Gas Association.
