About Fleet Fuel Testing

Fleet Biodiesel was founded in 2005 to address the growing need for biodiesel quality management. We changed our name Fleet Fuel Testing in 2009 to reflect our focus on diesel fuel quality management as well as biodiesel.

Why do we exist?
Bad diesel and biodiesel fuel can have profound and costly effects on a diesel fleet. Water contamination can cause immediate catastrophic issues such as a blown fuel injector. High acid number can cause long-term damage to the fuel system if used repeatedly. Even incorrect blending – mixing the wrong ratio of diesel and biodiesel into a blended fuel – may cause unexpected filter clogging that can bring a vehicle fleet to a standstill.

Fuel issues are even more widespread with the introduction of biodiesel and ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuels. These new fuel types are prone to degradation (oxidation) and water contamination – and biodiesel often contains harmful byproducts of the production process, such as glycerin.

The primary existing method for testing fuels is to package up a sample and send it to the lab. This presents some practical issues in packaging and transporting the fuel. Results can take days or even weeks – too long for most mechanics or fleet managers to wait. The lab tests are generally accurate, but also relatively expensive.

Fleet tests are used as screening tests to indicate when fuel quality is so questionable that it requires lab testing. The results are available in minutes. They do not generally provide numerical results (just pass/fail), but they are very cost-effective.

Fleet Fuel tests are being used in 44 of the 50 states in the US, as well as in 30 other countries across 6 of the 7 continents.
